Die fiktionale Modekollektion – eigentlich eine wachsende Sammlung an Aussagen sowohl zu Folklore-Mode im Sozialismus als auch zum Phänomen der „rumänischen Bluse“ im Zeitalter von Social Media – entstand auf Einladung von Andreea Palade Flondor für eine Ausstellung in der städtischen Galerie Timi?oara in 2018. Die Aussagen, hier in Form gestalteter Plakate, haben den konzeptionellen Rahmen für die Entwürfe der Student*innen der Master-Klasse für Mode an der Universität für Kunst und Design in Timişoara gebildet. Die von der Ie ausgehenden vestimentären Experimente waren das Ergebnis eines gemeinsam mit Barbara Schrödl und Andreea Palade Flondor geleiteten Workshops zu Fashion Research.
Die plakatierten Aussagen umfassten Slogans zu ‚Volkstracht‘ und ‚Volkskunst‘ (wie sie in den Volkskunstmonografien, Kunst- oder Modezeitschriften aus dem Sozialismus enthalten sind), Auszüge aus von mir geführten Interviews und nicht zuletzt Erinnerungen an Mode und Alltag im Sozialismus. Damit schließt The Milk Bar Collection an die Forschung meiner Ph.D.-Arbeit FASHIONABLY NATIONAL! ,Volkstracht‘ als Ressource im sozialistischen Rumänien aus der Perspektive von Forschung und Kunst an. Neu sind persönliche Bezüge zum Themenfeld (und welche in der Dissertation in einer einzigen Fußnote Erwähnung finden). Ausschlaggebend hierbei war nicht zuletzt der Ausstellungsort, da sich in den Galerieräumen in den 1980er Jahren eine Milchbar befand, welche von den Schüler*innen des nahe gelegenen Kunstgymnasiums – zu denen auch Andreea und ich zählten – in den Pausen gerne besucht wurde. Als Teil eines für die Zeit typischen modernen und multi-funktionalen Gebäudekomplexes im Zentrum der Stadt, ist der Galerieraum nur durch eine Glasfront vom Geschehen auf der Straße getrennt.

The fictional fashion collection – actually a growing collection of statements both on folklore fashion in socialism and on the phenomenon of the „Romanian blouse“ in the age of social media – was created at the invitation of Andreea Palade Flondor for an exhibition at the Timi?oara Municipal Gallery in 2018. The statements, here in the form of designed posters, formed the conceptual framework for the designs of the students of the Master class in Fashion at the University of Art and Design in Timi?oara. The vestimentary experiments starting from the Ie were the result of a workshop on fashion research conducted together with Barbara Schrödl and Andreea Palade Flondor. The postered statements included slogans on ‚folk costume‘ and ‚folk art‘ (as contained in the folk art monographs, art or fashion magazines from socialism), excerpts from interviews I conducted, and last but not least memories of fashion and everyday life in socialism. Thus The Milk Bar Collection continues the research of my Ph.D. work FASHIONABLY NATIONAL! ,Folk Costume‘ as a resource in socialist Romania from the perspective of research and art. New are the personal references to the topic (and which are mentioned in the dissertation in a single footnote). The decisive factor was not least the location of the exhibition, as there was a milk bar in the gallery rooms in the 1980s, which the pupils of the nearby art school – including Andreea and myself – liked to visit during their breaks. As part of a modern and multi-functional building complex in the centre of the city, typical of the time, the gallery space is separated from the street only by a glass front.
